Frequently asked questions

Academic credit is a means of quantifying and recognizing learning. Credit is awarded once you have successfully completed a module, in recognition of the amount and depth of learning which you have achieved. Credits are then accumulated towards the total required for a programme of study and a qualification.

Within the UK, one credit represents 10 notional hours of learning. Notional hours of learning are the number of hours which it is expected that a learner will spend to achieve the specified learning outcomes at that level. Institutions use this as a basis for setting the credit value of a module or programme before it is offered to students. e.g. a module that is estimated to involve 150 notional hours of learning will be assigned 15 credits.

If you participate in both Time-Valued CPD and Credit-Rated CPD in one year, you will have automatically completed the RAD CPD requirement.

Yes. If you wish to maintain your registration with the RAD, you have to participate in our CPD programme.

This details official policies, guidelines, advice, and terms and conditions. This should be read in conjunction with individual Specifications for various exams and groups of exams, which detail learning outcomes, assessment criteria, mark schemes and resources. 

Examination content is detailed in the syllabus books, which include word notes and Benesh Movement Notation and are available from the RAD Canada Shop along with DVDs, CDs and sheet music.

Focus on Exams is published three times a year and is dedicated to matters relating to examinations, eg updates on syllabus content, examination policies and procedures, reminders and advice, and general articles of interest. The annual Fees Table is published in the October edition. It is translated into several languages and sent to all RAD Registered Teachers, as well as being published on RAD websites.

Exams are conducted by an examiner, with no teacher present. Up to four candidates perform the syllabus and are marked against set criteria. They are available for every level from Primary in Dance to Solo Seal Award. Successful candidates receive a certificate, and for Graded Examinations only (Primary to Grade 8), a medal.

Class Awards are available for Primary in Dance and Grades 1 – 5. Up to eight candidates perform the syllabus (only one dance is required rather than two). Class Awards are led by a teacher or an assistant, and the examiner assesses the Class. The mark scheme for Class Awards is less detailed than exams, providing candidates with a broad overview of standard rather than a detailed breakdown. Successful candidates receive a certificate and a medal.

Presentation Classes are available for Grades 6 – 8. Up to eight candidates perform a selection of material from the exam syllabus. Presentation Classes from Grades 6-7 are led by a teacher or an assistant and, at Grade 8, by the examiner. An Examiner is present, but does not assess the class. All candidates receive a certificate of participation.

Solo Performance Awards are available at Grades 1-5. Candidates are assessed by an examiner through the performance of three solo dances. Successful candidates receive a certificate and a bar.
